About Kathryn Sassall

  • Biography
Studied Visual Communications diploma at West Sussex College of Art and Design. Taught oil painting by Judith [?] from Brighton College of Art , in a class based in a building down an alley just round corner from new Artfinder owners' Art Republik.
Noise for your Walls  This was how a visually impaired buyer described one of my Weekender, cycling paintings. The bright colours, abstraction and light play giving a sense of speed. An observational painter, I respond to light and movement including the movement in silence and stillness. Creating with a variety of media to suit the subject and preferably observing from life in the countryside, at events or back in the studio from my memories, photos or recordings.
I work in series. It helps when I'm exhibiting as several works are shown together in physical gallery solo and group shows or online. I use a restricted palette of colours, and have tried out a number of styles, but return to a fast and loose style with vibrant colours. The pictures work well together as well as individually.
How important are the life studies? Massive! These are very important pieces. Knowing how the bones, muscles and sinews shape the body through regularly drawing them means I can work more intuitively (with a higher level of accuracy) without over-thinking whilst layering the paint in the larger works. Each piece reflects the sitter and what was happening at the time it was completed.
How does my technique work? The paintings are built in layers. I start by lightly blocking out the main shapes. Then I create the background in three to four layers of colours by brush or palette knife. I colour block out the main subject usually cyclists or jockeys. Then I'll build on top of that overlaying and re-working over several days or even weeks as the oil layers have to dry in between.
What is the benefit of the layering? Collectors of my painted originals have confirmed that the pictures mood and feeling of movement changes as different light plays upon them. Which they love! This is because the light will be reflecting through the different glazes and directions of paint (water-soluble oils or acrylics with various mediums).

Easter Monday offers the first chance to see a collection of work by members of the Clehonger Art Group at the Old Mayor’s Parlour gallery in Church Street, part of the Independent Quarter, Hereford showing the colour in their lives.

The exhibition which runs until Sunday 12th April features a collection of pieces by 8 Herefordshire-based creatives in a range of media including bronze, glass, egg tempera, oil, acrylic and watercolour.

Each artist captures the colours of the life around them in a diverse selection of subjects including architecture, flowers, weekend pursuits, the river Wye, the May Fair with the coastal areas of the Marches inspiring 3 of the artists.

These include images of a stunt bike rider, mountain bike downhiller, road-racers and of course the weekenders who go out for the pure joy of riding!
