This artwork by Kateryna Bortsova is something of a playful, modern-day Mona Lisa. She looks at you with her head at a slight angle and a mysterious expression on her face that is hard to understand. A lock of hair hanging slightly over one eye gives her a hint of danger. It makes you wonder if you should come closer to her or stay away altogether. But her flamboyant hat, and the sexy dress along with the coat draped over her shoulders give her the look of a famous cabaret singer from the 1920s. She seems to be inviting you—maybe even flirting with you, but there’s also a chance she’ll turn you away before you speak a word.
Bathed in rouge and perfume with accessories to highlight her femininity (such as gloves, earrings and a necklace), we may never truly know her, but there is absolutely no doubt she’s glamourous, she’s untouchable and she’s remarkable. She is a Parisian.
Thank you, Kateryna.

This order from Kateryna Bortsova was for 5 different artworks that were each different, but also had one common thread—they were not large, flashy, colorful works that demanded your attention like a child pulling your pantleg, but rather, small, intimate portraits painted in earth tones that gave them an accessible quality, suggesting you could communicate with the subjects of these works and even understand them.
The first is an undated, early ink drawing of a young, cautious woman with striking features, staring directly at the viewer…or artist (if this were based upon a live model). She seems content with how her day is going, but I believe she’s asking herself, “What comes next, after this is over?”
This is followed by an impressionistic painting of a woman’s face, framed by a snake draped around her shoulders. Her eyes are closed, her lips are separated, and her head is tilted back, suggesting she has already given in to temptation. It’s a very personal intrusion into the private world of someone who is not in control of herself any longer.
The next piece is a favorite staple of Kateryna’s—an artwork painted on a city map. Done in acrylics, the collection of buildings demonstrate the brick-colored roof tiles and bright white building that one sees in Spain and other places modeled after the locale. Growing up in Southern California where many cities, streets and buildings were planned with appreciative touches of Spain and Mexico, I can say that although I’ve never been to Spain, I have seen these buildings my whole life and they are a beauty to behold. And they’re certainly a sight for sore eyes, especially at the end of a grey, cold and rainy winter.
The fourth artwork is of a queen, but not your traditional queen. She isn’t dressed in a fancy robe, and she doesn’t wear priceless jewels. Perhaps she’s not the kind of queen we read about in fairy tales or see in cinemas, but she’s possibly the queen of her neighborhood or her family or maybe just in her own mind, suggesting she deserves better than what the world has given her. In actuality, the painting shows her wearing a city—her city—as a crown. Perhaps that’s all she needs to be a queen—her people. She doesn’t want or need fine clothes or worldly possessions. She doesn’t even seem to wear make-up. But the gaze on her face is unmistakably one that belongs to a queen.
The last painting could be of two friends or two sisters. They could live in a village in Africa, or they could be spotted at a café in any cosmopolitan city in Europe. They’re beautiful. They’re graceful. They’re refined in their souls and at peace in their minds. And they sparkle like the sun of life. They are absolute treasures…
…just like all of these artworks.

This painting is not only a great artwork to own, but it makes a statement about what it's like to intentionally and purposely isolate oneself from society. Painted during the first year of what's now a three-year pandemic, this piece shows two sides to the same individual. One side of her shows a calm, clear-thinking, rational person who is doing what she thinks is best. The other side shows the same individual with an electric smile, flashing her teeth in a somewhat concerning way. It makes you wonder—"Is she happy?" "Is she laughing sarcastically?" "Is she glad to have finally made physical contact with another human being?" "Is she going mad?" If you've been paying attention to the world over the last three years, you'll probably come to the conclusion that the answer is—all of the above.

I love this artwork by Kateryna Bortsova. It's completely different from other works of hers that I've purchased in the past. This particular work is exploding with vibrant blues, greens and purples. It has an attractive quality that comes from the wild mix of color, but the subject itself conveys a serious tone, making it a very different piece of art. I just can't say enough of this artwork. It's quite spectacular.

I have bought many artworks from Kateryna and her artistry never ceases to amaze me. Her ideas are grounded in emotion, mythology, fame, religion, attraction, nature and risk-taking. Her paintings are quite daring and at times can even be shocking, but art is supposed to make us think and ponder questions we wouldn't ordinarily ask ourselves. Kateryna seems to paint what is burning in her soul, rather than what she thinks will sell. To me, that is the mark of a true artist.

Kateryna is a very talented artist who has a variety of interests that are clearly displayed in her artworks. She paints celebrity portraits, cityscapes, studies in the male and female body, multimedia pieces and other fascinating works. Her ideas are extremely creative and very adventurous. The artworks are packaged well and arrive not long after I place the order. I always have great experiences in buying art from Kateryna.
