    In my element...

A VERY cold day on Skye - I was wearing no less than three pairs of trousers! A German tourist kindly sent me this amazing photo of my sketching by the Fairy Pools... can you spot me?!

    Sketching on location

    Sketching on location

I love painting in oils, but it isn't practicable to drag a canvas and turps up a hill in order to paint in the wind (trust me, I've tried it!) For a start, that canvas becomes a kite in the slightest breeze... So I sketch in graphite and watercolour so I can travel light. Walking through the landscape is crucial to developing my paintings - I'm never happier than when up high on a mountain with a sketchbook on my knee.

    Camping at 3,000ft

Showing my camp near the summit of Beinn Ime in the Scottish West Highlands. Did a spot of sketching and wrote a blog post about it here : http://www.juliearbuckleart.com/the-cobbler-beinn-ime-a-walk-of-contrasts/

    On the Rocks

    On the Rocks

Getting a bit chilly photographing waves from Troon on the Ayrshire Coast. The Isle of Arran is across the water. Although I would have LOVED to do some sketching on the spot, it was just too windy and cold, so photographs and a face full of spray will have to suffice... Photo credit: Andy Hough Photography

Sketching the Arrochar Alps from Beinn Dubh

A short walk up the grassy slopes of Beinn Dubh, the hills which stands behind Luss on the the western bank of Loch Lomond, reveals wonderful views for relatively little effort. Looking north west to the Arrochar Alps, the Cobbler, Beinn Narnain and Beinn Ime are clearly visible.

    Sketching atop Ben Vane

A sunny day in the Arrochar Alps; clouds chasing over the hillsides; all set up just off the summit of Ben Vane for some sketching. Not a bad day at the office.

En Plein Air - By Loch Maree

En Plein Air - By Loch Maree

Looks idyllic, doesn't it?! It was actually high midge season and I was painting whilst wearing a nylon mesh over my head... still, the painting worked well! I do suffer for my art at times ;)

    Taking in the view

    Taking in the view

Enjoying the Buchaille (Stob Dearg) in Glencoe from a neighbouring hill. As I was camping out up here I was able to enjoy the golden hour before the sunset and came away with a sketchbook filled with ideas.
