Biography
My mediums of choice are acrylics and oil paints, and occasionally mixed-media elements for added texture and interest.
I'm often inspired to paint after a walk around the neighborhood or a visit to the beach, my happy place. Afterwards, I head to the studio and start each painting with a layer or two of gesso, then add pencil or charcoal marks to prepare the surface. And the process begins.....sometimes I sketch a design onto the substrate and other times I let the design magically appear as I continue adding paint to the canvas.
People ask what I think about when I paint, and to be honest I don't really know. I don't listen to music and I generally paint in silence. I prefer an intuitive approach to a calculated one but each painting contains a bit of both.
This dance with the brush and canvas continues until I "hear" a phrase or a word in my mind. Here, the title is born and the painting stops.
I let the finished piece sit for a few days as I continually look at it to make sure it's really done. Occasionally I add something but normally it's just a wind-down period before I put the final coats of varnish on and sign the piece.
Done.
