About Joseph Peter D'silva

Hello. My name is Joseph Peter D'silva and I am a Watercolour Artist from Vancouver, Canada. I have been drawing and painting since I was a kid but with studies at The Goa College of Art and my dedication to paint outdoors, I learnt to paint in watercolours. Prior to coming to Canada I spent many years drawing and painting in Goa, India where I remember having fond memories of painting Landscapes in villages, boats and seascapes and the beautiful Goan Architecture in watercolours. At that time I had a fascination with watercolours and I still do till this day. Though I have tried many other mediums I still find great satisfaction in painting with watercolours.

Travel and Watercolour painting has somewhat always interested me. Through my watercolour paintings I travel to that place, imagine that moment, hear those sounds, feel the air, see the light and shade and it is through these experiences I give everyone a chance to feel what I am feeling. Maybe I am bringing back memories of a time and place where you might have been.

My style in watercolours consists of multiple washes building form with various colour tones and values. Through this I also create lot of depth while balancing shade and light. My first wash is mostly wet in wet and after that I start building my washes to a finished painting. My work is mostly suggestive with impression and not extremely detailed leaving watercolor to give me some surprises. Another style of mine is a Line and Wash technique I use for a more spontaneous approach to watercolours keeping the work more loose and suggestive.
