About Jemal Gugunava

  • Biography
Spreading his time between UK, Prague and Georgia, Jemal Gugunava enjoys  painting everything that catches his eye and imagination from abstract landscapes, places, streets, people, simple still life to female forms. His art reflects his mood, spontaneous outpouring of emotions and philosophical approach and therefore so diverse.

Although Jemal's philosophy of life is harmony, purity, deep reflection, beauty, contemplation, reserve and simplicity of existence, the artist tends to exaggerate rather than simply describe. His colour palette is dramatic and intriguing.  The artist often applies thick paint straight onto the painting surface using so called 'impasto' technique that compliments painting wet-on-wet or alla prima, which means 'in one go'. Using high-quality oil paints, a palette knife and brushes Jemal creates thickly textured paintings that are rich in colour and depth.

The artist forces a viewer to concentrate his or her attention on the main object, not being distracted by small details and long descriptions.

During his artistic career Jemal has exhibited around the globe. His works are in the public museums in Georgia, Armenia and Russia and in many private collections throughout the world. He often participates in auctions and donates paintings to the different charities.

The artist works with clients, takes commission and is happy to create an unique custom piece in any size, including abstract landscapes and portraits. Please refer to the Saatchi Art website for his portraits.

The cities were twinned in 1988 when Georgia was still part of the Soviet Union. The idea behind this exhibition is to celebrate a friendship, international connection, cultural diversity, self expression, innovation and traditions by invoking the concept of “unity without uniformity and diversity without fragmentation”. The exhibition curators have endeavour to bring together Georgian and British artists that have been featured in art exhibitions and festivals in Tbilisi and Bristol during the last 30 years, as well as including other established and emerging talents from both cities.
