Setting up my easel on location

I love the thrill of painting on location, there is no substitute than studying direct from nature and when I do need to work in studio I call upon my memory from the many hours of observation to bring the knowledge and inspiration from painting en plein air.

Plein air painting of wheatfields and the Kilburn White Horse

A short video of me painting on location near Coxwold in North Yorkshire. This view looks across ripe wheat fields to the village of Coxwold and the white horse of Kilburn in the distance.

Time lapse of the start of 'Winter Light, Terrington'

A short time lapse video showing my process as I begin this painting. I like to block in the main colours from the outset as this provides the basic structure for the interpretation of the scene in my mind whether it's from reference as seen here or if I'm working outdoors directly from nature. This painting is currently available on my shop, Winter Light, Terrington

    Finding a location

A cold bright January day and I'm scouting with my easel for a view that catches my eye. After wandering around for a while I settled on this view looking across winter ploughed fields towards winter tree canopies and hedgerows all catching the low sun beautifully.

    Hello!

    Hello!

Despite being photo shy I know it's always good to put a face to a name, so here I am in my studio working away.

    On Location (Plein Air)

    On Location (Plein Air)

Most of my paintings are painted on location or at the very least started there. Sometimes the weather changes or I lose the light, I mean it is the UK! I started this particular painting with a blue sky and an hour in the grey cloud descended and it just got darker and darker. Despite the frustrations of the weather, the cold, the heat, bugs and wind, nothing compares to the experience of painting on location. There is so much more information visually first hand than when compared to a photograph. The subtlety of colour, the light, atmospheric perspective and the sheer effect it has on your senses invigorates, inspires and captivates and the more I do work on location the more it informs me when I am in the studio. Memory of the experiences of plein air painting informs just as much as a reference sketch or photograph.

    In my studio

I'm lucky enough to have a small studio space above my garage, my sanctuary where I can come and go without disruption and immerse myself in my artistic practice. Here's a snap of me putting the finishing touches to a painting which was primarily done on location and refined back in my studio.

drawing on my ipad near Newbrugh, North Yorkshire

All my drawings begin with me finding a subject, viewpoint usually from a dog walk or driving the country lanes but the best ones are views which you have to find by going off track. I also take photographs as sometimes I need to finish the drawing later either because I'm running out of time or the light is too bright on the surface of my ipad - I usually draw in the shade or even in my car because it can get too bright.
