About Jane Elizabeth Cullum

  • Biography
I'm a full-time painter based in the UK, inspired by the beauty of the natural world and my love of travel. Over the years I've explored many beautiful parts of the world, and have spent hours photographing and painting sea, sky, mountains and the movement of light and shadow over the landscape. I use these photographs and drawings as inspiration and reference when I get back to the studio, but I rarely plan out a painting in detail, preferring to let the images emerge during the painting process. I use mainly water-based media, especially acrylic, as it allows me to be quite energetic with the paint, layering it on, scraping it off, and scoring marks into the surface. At other times I use the paint loosely, and allow it to flow and merge into interesting shapes and patterns. I believe strongly in the importance of the imagination and creative, soulful expression for the development of the full human being, especially in the interesting and challenging times we are living in at the moment. I exhibit regularly, and my work has found buyers from as far afield as Peru, Sweden, Ireland and the USA. "Your paintings have 'duende' (soul)"
