About Jane Tilley

  • Biography
Since early childhood I've had an unstoppable urge to make, draw and create. I adore wire as a medium and love its ability to free the drawn line from my sketchbook to create drawings in space. I am inspired by a diverse range of subjects, from mundane everyday objects, to the beauty and patterns of the natural world, the history of European fashion to Japanese 18th century wood block prints. My wire journey began when I was inspired by the late Alex Calder's quirky wire portraits, I loved the simplicity and expressiveness of the wire. I'll only retire when my fingers stop being able to move and manipulate wire, when that sad day comes I'll be forced to look for another way to channel my creativity, but in the meantime I'm going to enjoy this journey while it lasts. As an art lover I greatly admire Artfinder for it's quality of selected artists and their work. I believe it captures the right target audience which would embrace and love my unique sculptures.

Awarded for my work "Breaking Boundaries," a large 3D and 2D wire sculpture depicting a rugger player bursting through a wall of the historic Rugby boarding school (distinctive architecture by William Butterfield), holding the famous Gilbert rugby ball in a tackle. Representing not only the dedication and determination of a skilled rugger player, but a man breaking through the restrictions of a historically strict and austere private school. The sculpture was entirely made with 0.5mm iron wire. It was also awarded "The Peoples Choice" award. The open art exhibition at the Rugby Art Gallery & Museum covers all residents of Warwickshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and the County of the City of Coventry.
