About Howard Sturman

  • Biography
As an artist , my devotion to light , shadows , and textures drives me.  A majority of my work is derived from layering or texturing studio work with a myriad of images taken from the world around us. From grudge industrial , to natures surfaces, the final work is a pastiche , a homage to the world surrounding us via its infusion into the human shape. The images taken outside of the studio drive my endeavours inside the studio. Whether the base layer be the Paris skyline or a bleak umber toned natural arch in the Utah desert , all are imbued with potential to wend their way into the work. The initial image will usually determine the poses necessary in the studio session in most situations. The goal , in many cases , is to challenge the viewer to understand how the base image compliments or marries the background image. Yes, the darker, more industrial the end product , the better. Stepping further into the concept , human shapes have been used as modifiers in my most recent work . Each work is carefully planned and experimented with as a lengthy process to determine the final piece .
