About Howard Sills

  • Biography

My work navigates the delicate balance between representation and abstraction, creating a sanctuary from the pressures of modern life. Each piece is a visual retreat, offering viewers a tranquil space to rest their gaze and find peace. Inspired by ever-changing landscapes and the subtle interplay of light and colour my paintings aim to evoke a sense of calm and introspection.

Through my art, I strive to capture fleeting moments of beauty and serenity, inviting the viewer to pause and reflect. The natural world serves as both my muse and my canvas, where I explore the harmony and tension between the seen and the unseen. My creative process is a meditative journey, where each application of paint, either through brushwork or other tools,  is a step towards uncovering the quiet elegance of our surroundings.

I hope my work provides a moment of respite and a reminder of the simple, yet profound, beauty that exists in our everyday lives.

There is a sense of quietude in my work that perhaps reflects the years I spent living in Japan where the beauty of space and stillness is itself a sought after aesthetic. Though still, many of the pieces are heavily saturated - the colours vivid and striking. Others provide a space for contemplation and for thoughts to develop and flit around. I am influenced by many artists from Ornulf Opdahl to Mark Rothko, all of whom create a sense of space in their art.

A stunning painting. Reminds me of the Monet paintings I once saw in Russia - when you look at the canvas, the image comes out of the blue (colour) and captures the atmosphere of dusk over water. I Love it.

    Testimonial:Seascape 3 & Seascape 4 by Howard Sills

"I'm delighted with 'Seascape 3' and 'Seascape 4'. Both the colours and composition are very strong and the series is very well conceived. The colours are even stronger than they appear on screen and the quality surpassed my expectation for a print. Great work Howard!! Thank you also for the recommendation regarding framing. . Very confident.
