Biography
I make sculpture of people, animals and unusual creatures that I use as metaphors to tell an internal narrative. I work with great consideration, integrity and humour, and I communicate through direct visual impact and shared emotive response. I aim to create sculpture that is exciting and moving, and which speaks to an audience who is interested in engaging with areas of deeper significance within our lives.
I feel driven to make sculpture out of a need to express experiences, feelings and emotions that I encounter as part of life. Paradoxically I find that I can communicate more accurately through a slightly more obscure subject matter, and I am not making an illustration so much as a prompt to deeper shared understandings. I am inspired by every-day subtleties that I find around me, and my creative process comes out of discovering physical forms that express human experience.
I model the original sculptures in wax onto a wire armature, and then I cast them as limited editions into a vibrant British-made eco-resin. I originated this innovative casting technique which creates an aesthetic that keeps the beautiful translucent qualities of the wax while remaining accessible to a wide audience.
I am an Executive Committee Member of Bath Society of Artists, and an Artist Network Member of the Royal West of England Academy.
