  • Biography

    I work primarily in painting. I create in an expressive and instinctual way, combining objects, people and scenarios, both real and imagined. For subject matter I follow my wide ranging interests including pop culture, folk horror, nature, science fiction, family, and everyday objects.

    My practice also involves curating, illustration and experimental film photography.

    I studied BA (Hons) Graphic Arts and Design at Leeds Metropolitan (Beckett) University and MA Curation Practices at Leeds Arts University, and have a Foundation Degree from Cleveland College of Art.

    I am the curator of Compact Contemporary gallery, a miniature art gallery which can be viewed on Instagram @compactcontemporary

    Event: We're From Earth!

    Venue: Left Bank, Leeds, West Yorkshire, UK

    We're from Earth! at Left Bank is a selection of paintings by artist Helen
    Dryden, featuring imaginary landscapes and their explorers. Helen uses a
    psychedelic colour palette to create an other-worldly experience.
    The paintings explore the artist’s observations of landscape and nature, and
    delve into imaginary worlds and plants which may be extra terrestrial or
    fantasy places, or even polluted landscapes. Viewers are invited to invent
    their own narrative.
    Helen is thinking about human use of land, our claim on territory and what the
    future might hold. She is influenced by science and science fiction; popular
    culture, nature and environmental concerns.

    Render Me Chaotic is a solo show of paintings by Leeds based artist Helen Dryden, presented by The Art Court in collaboration with Eye Room.

    Helen Dryden uses painting as a way to explore, wonder and sometimes poke fun at the world we know, as well as imagining worlds we don’t yet know. Her solo exhibition, Render Me Chaotic, features paintings on canvas and wooden cutouts, embracing a bold, vibrant, and expressive style.

    Influenced by pop culture, sci-fi, everyday domestic life and nature, Dryden’s wide ranging interests are reflected in her paintings. She is attracted to absurd things, in life and in her imagination.

    For the first time, I'll be taking part in Manchester Art Fair, represented by The Art Court alongside 8 other artists currently based in Leeds/Yorkshire.
    The Art Fair opens with a Preview on Friday 17th November 5-9pm, and is open all weekend 18-19th November 10am-6pm.
    Tickets are on sale at £10 for the weekend and £25 for the Preview - but you can get free tickets by emailing curator@theartcourt.co.uk - Free tickets! Yay! They are limited in supply, so get in there quick.

    Woven Stories celebrates 10 years of art and culture at Sunny Bank Mills with an exhibition that maps that anniversary with a selection of artists and makers who have contributed to our story and in doing so shared their own.

    Over 30 artists and makers are celebrated with work that includes painting, print, textiles and ceramics. The exhibition will change and grow over the next few months.
