About Heidi Thompson

  • Biography
I am driven to create paintings that are full of light and energy because they such beautiful images reveal something deeper about myself. I believe we are all beings of light and paintings have the magical nature to express that inner light which we can't see. When someone positively responds to my work, I believe they too are seeing that light within themselves.

"Attuned to the artist’s role as a medium, Heidi Thompson works with the physics of nature. The artist becomes a conduit for energy, engaging in a painterly process that involves intuition and an inner dynamic so contrary to the expressionist works Thompson produced earlier in her career. These paintings are anti-form and all about the physics of the moment that exists in many moments, in fact stands outside time. Therein lies the challenge and the invitation!  We are not involved in recognizing anything when we look at a Heidi Thompson painting. We are receivers looking into a brilliant spectacle." – John Grande, Canadian Art Critic

Heidi Thompson was born in Vernon, B.C. Canada.  In 1974, after graduating high school, she moved to Switzerland to work as an Au Pair. In her spare time she painted and discovered her love for art. In 1975 Thompson was accepted into the Kunstgewerbeschule (University of Art and Design) in Zürich.  After completing a four-year program, she earned a Swiss Diploma for Professional Photography.

Pursuing her passion for art, Heidi Thompson moved to Germany and apprenticed with the artist Oskar Koller.  Koller recommended that she continue her education at the Akademie der Bildene Künste Nürnberg where she studied painting for one year. Thompson then moved to Budapest and studied at the Hungarian University of Fine Art for one more year before returning to her home town in 1982. Ever since, Thompson has worked as a photographer, publisher, teacher and painter.  She is married, has one child and paints full-time exhibiting her work in Europe, Canada and the USA.  Heidi Thompson lives in Coldstream, British Columbia.
