About Hannah Cawthorne

  • Biography
I am an Abstract painter and photographer. For a few years now I have had my own garden studio at my house that has helped really push my art forward in exciting ways. I love to create big, colourful abstracts that express my thoughts and feelings about the world around us and our own, inner worlds. I am very interested in the sub-conscious and the purely emotional level of human experience. I love to create dreamlike landscapes that express psychological states rather than external reality. I work very intuitively, starting a painting with only vague plans of what it will become, and letting the painting take shape according to it's own internal logic, often re-painting areas several times until it gives me the feel I want from it.
My photography work is inspired by the texture and colourful of urban surfaces - paint, concrete, rusting metal, graffiti and peeling posters. Aesthetically these things give me a lot of pleasure, but on a deeper level I am really interested in the random factors that lead to the creation of these images, the life lived that the marks represent and the unseen human hands that created something beautiful without intending to.
