About Gregory Millar

  • Biography
Gregory Millar I don’t remember ever ‘becoming’ an artist but from an early age I’ve always loved to draw. At school I discovered the work of great painters, sculptors and designers and went on to to study at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee and later at Manchester University. For me great art has a kind of immortality. I find this exciting and life enhancing. I want to produce art in response to the beauty I find in everyday life and which can connect with the viewer at an emotional level. I enjoy drawing and painting. Currently I am working with linocut as a printmaker. I like the creative challenge of producing subtle work with such a bold medium. I prefer to produce larger artworks as they give me greater opportunity to add detail and interest to my work. For me drawing upon and cutting linocut blocks is like working on a 2D sculpture. It is often hard, physical work that demands my full concentration. Even so when mistakes happen, they are often blessings in disguise, as I have to be open to take a new creative path. I also like that I can produce linocut print editions from a single linocut plate. Like natural siblings, each linocut print will look similar to another in the edition, but each one will remain unique with its own charm. Every completed linocut print is a learning experience for me, which not only benefits my other artwork, but also the students at my printmaking workshops. I want to sell on Artfinder because it would mean joining an amazing community of contemporary artists as well as enabling me to share my artwork with a global audience who are passionate about creativity. 1. Where are you from? Dundee in Scotland, UK 2. How long have you been creating art? Since I was a child. 3. Where are you based? Leicestershire in England, UK 4. What drew you to Artfinder? I was drawn to Artfinder by a mention of thanks to Artfinder on Instagram by artist Margaret Mallows. 5. What formal art training do you have, if any? BA Hons degree from Duncan of Jordanstone, College of Art, Dundee, Scotland, UK MA in Design from Manchester University, England, UK 6. Have you been involved in any exhibitions or had gallery representation? Since 2018 I have exhibited in a variety of independent shows and larger mixed exhibitions including the National Open Printmaking Exhibition at the Bankside Gallery London, The Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair, the Artisanand Gallery in Aberfeldy and the 2020 Society of Wildlife Artists exhibition ‘The Natural Eye’ at the Mall Galleries in London.
