    Sketching the lakes in Washington

    Sketching the lakes in Washington

    In-between art shows this summer, I have taken hiking trips through the beautiful and awe-inspiring wilderness of Washington state. This particular day I hiked to a small lake to soak up the sun, get cooled off in the fresh water, and sketch the light reflecting on the lake. Quick sketching is a great way to be with the subject and find the essence of its character, expressed as line, value, and composition. The difficult part is at the end of the adventure when having to leave. I could spend hours and hours in the wilderness!

    New Studio Setup

    New Studio Setup

    I recently moved into a new house and converted the garage into a studio on the Big Island of Hawaii. It still needs some work, but I'm excited to have a more permanent space after traveling for the last several years, and needing to continually setup a studio and take it down. The paintings featured here are from my latest series inspired by the Na Pali Coast on the island of Kauai.

    Painting Santorini

    Plein air painting in Santorini, The Cyclades, Greece. I setup the easel on the stairs wide enough for one person. Definitely the tightest spot I've ever painted in, and it was a pain to keep moving out of the way of people, but well worth it. Painting this few over a course of a few hours was breathtaking.
