About Giles Newman

  • Biography

Like photography, my work captures light and a moment in time. However, unlike a photograph, my sculptures replay that moment continuously as the viewer moves around them. Though fixed in three dimensions, the sculpture’s surfaces and spaces transform as light shifts, altering its form and narrative. The viewer becomes an active participant, unraveling and reshaping the story and meaning with each new perspective.

I am captivated by the transformative power of the subtractive process—the act of shaping wood to reveal the forms envisioned in my imagination. Through the ambiguity of abstraction, I delve into the intangible realm of human emotions, striving to give physical form to the complex interplay of feelings that arise as the unconscious self reacts to the chaos of the external world.

My sculptures, inspired by the curves, lines, and geometry of the human form and the natural world, reflect our innate need for physical connection and communication through the profound language of touch.
