About Gerry Coles

  • Biography

From an early age I loved painting and drawing and would spend hours sketching. I studied Art at school, but not beyond A level. Then life intervened and somehow, something I used to enjoy became something I never did. Art took a backseat in my life for far too long.

The seeds of change were sown when I visited the Victoria gallery in Bath a few years ago and saw an exhibition of wonderful relief prints which made me want to try for myself. I bought myself a starter linocut kit and I began to teach myself how to carve and print. It didn't take long before I was hooked.
Soon after this I attended a workshop in Linocut reduction technique, which I now use for my multi-colour prints.
I have been printing, practising and improving ever since.
The ideas for my linocuts come from various sources. Many themes come from nature; I live in the countryside and inspiration from animals, birds, flowers and trees is never far away. Some are more urban, I often visit Oxford and I'm inspired by the buildings and architectural forms that the City provides.
I have always loved colour and boldness in art and I think Lino printing is the perfect medium for showing this off.
