  • As a child I quickly developed a great love of Wales from visits to grandparents in Tredegar, South Wales. I thrilled to the bright sunny days but also the wet gloomy days where the purples and greys shone out from walls and roofs. It is the sound images of Dylan Thomas' 'Under Milkwood'.
As far back as I can remember I developed what became a signature based on the music of Elgar and the Malvern Hills. Almost all my paintings from memory have a Malverns mountain backdrop along with two birds as a symbol of freedom. The Malverns were the closest I could get to my beloved Wales, a high place to catch a distant vista of a land I had a heart for.
Who would have thought that in our seventies we would move to Wales, with a house sitting a field away from the sea!
We have learned to speak Welsh as learners and continue to do so. It is important to us both.

I now paint mainly in oils and acrylics with an aim to capture a feeling, a moment, an expression. Subjects often include villages - seascapes - mountains and hills - and always, the wonderful ever changing skies.
The two quotes on my ARTFINDER site are from the Bible. As a Christian I have always loved the image of 'the valleys full of corn' bursting into song. It speaks to me of exuberance and abundance. I seek in my painting to express something of that fullness. I know the world has a great deal of sadness but I can perhaps show that it also is a place of incredible beauty. My longing has always been to open peoples eyes to the places they have passed by without noticing.
