About Francesco Mussida

  • Biography
My work focuses mainly on the plant world, choosing a totally analog approach, using exclusively vintage cameras and following the methods of manual processing of film development and limited edition printing. I deeply love analog photography, its manual nature and having to be in the process totally. There are no shortcuts, and the darkroom is where technique and patience come together to bring my artistic vision to life. My works on plants reflect deep attention to the way nature expresses its language through forms, movements and propagations. For these works, like In-Difesa and Native series, I chose the form of the portrait as a method of all-encompassing observation towards light, subject and air. The mission behind this choice is to preserve a natural space between observer and observed subject, avoiding any kind of digital interpretation and always keeping involved natural variables such as light, time and emotions. Each portrait is made in the field with the precise intention of respecting environmental influences. No plants were cut down for my shots, and never will be. Since 2016 he has been teaching film development and analog printing techniques and runs a blog entirely dedicated to analog culture Stampaanalogica.

    Event: Sotto una buona stella

    Dates: 15 Jul 2024 - 25 Jun 2024

Venue: Sala Espositiva Comunale, Via Palma, Teramo

The Under A Good Star series and all my work on plants. An exhibition with over 50 silver gelatin prints and antique printing techniques.

The photographic project ‘Under a Good Star’ interweaves the mystery guarded by turtles with the myth and symbolism of which they are bearers. With this work, the aim is to invite the public to focus on the relationship between man's rationality and his need to witness the inscrutable mystery of the cosmos and nature.
In the series of images characterised by an oneiric aesthetic, the mystery and sacredness of a moment experienced and participated in almost as if in front of a messianic, supernatural or extraterrestrial event is represented.
The darkness, the constellations, the traces on the sand and the saving presence of the sea that will welcome the little turtles: Shot in analogue black and white and printed manually in the darkroom, ‘Under a Good Star’ is the story of a wait.

    Event: InDifesa

    Dates: 21 May 2024 - 21 Jun 2024

Venue: Jus Museum, Palazzo Calabritto - Napoli

inDifesa is a photographic series investigating the techniques some plant species adopt to protect themselves from predators or to cope with harsh environmental conditions.
Some plants have become warriors, hardening themselves to protect their fragility. Thorns, mucrons, armor and spines testify to archetypal forms of adaptation and resistance, communicating a posture of defense. In this game of sharp forms, the promise of a laceration, the pain of a wound is enough to create a necessary and vital distance.
Nature knows how to defend itself if the rules of the game are natural; when humans exceed these rules, nature is defenseless.
