    Sanding technique

Sanding technique in painting is a specialized artistic method used to create texture and depth on the surface of a painting or canvas. By sanding, layers of paint or material are deliberately removed, resulting in a unique visual effect. This technique can give a painting a sense of aging, patina, or wear and is applicable in both abstract and realistic artworks. Various tools are employed in the sanding process, such as sandpaper, sanding machines, or even hand-held sanding stones. The artist controls the degree of sanding to highlight or blur specific areas of the painting. This creates subtle color transitions, exposed layers, and interesting textures that couldn't be achieved with paint alone. The sanding technique requires a high level of skill and sensitivity to the material, as there is a risk of removing too much and damaging the artwork. When applied correctly, however, it allows for a fascinating combination of smooth and rough surfaces, as well as a play between transparency and opacity, giving the piece a distinctive depth and expressiveness. In modern art, the sanding technique is often used to create pieces that blend past and present or to make a work appear intentionally "unfinished." Artists use this method to add an additional dimension to their work, providing the viewer with a tactile, almost tangible experience.
