Plein Air in a hidden bamboo forest on San Miguel, Azores

I realized how much I enjoy painting in the depth of a forest, being one on one with nature. There’s unspeakable calm in this solitude. The energy of the bamboo singing in the wind, wild birds curiously sneaking all around, new sounds, the sweet scents of damp vegetation.

Plein Air at Lagoa do Fogo, Azores

The magic of nature and primeval forests covered in fog, the solitude while capturing it on canvas. The moments when I feel the happiest.

I love taking my studio outside, especially if it involves hiking to Lagoa do Fogo (Lake of Fire) on San Miguel, Azores.

    Earth Pigments

    Earth Pigments

Earth pigments that I found in the cold mountain river and on the forest floor. I turn those rocks into a fine powder, then mix with medium and make my own watercolor paints. It's not a fast process, but it's well worth the result. Handmade paints are one of the most luxurious and beautiful paints I've ever worked with. Building and stretching my own canvases, making my own paint - all of those steps allow me to be closer to my art practice.

    pigments

Last spring I started making my own paints from the earth pigments and shells I'd find on my favorite beach. The idea of not just painting a place but literally painting with the place has captivated my mind. No conventionally made paint can compare with the one you made yourself. Starting from finding pigments, grinding them, and then carefully and slowly mulling the finest powder into paint.
