About Deb Sinha

  • Biography

Making art gives me meaning and helps me understand our world. I am a contemporary realist painter, mostly self-taught. Although I work as a software engineer, painting has always been my hobby, and I have been painting professionally since 2016.

Growing up in India, I was surrounded by art and colors, but I didn't have a formal art education, especially in Western art. My interest in classical art started after a trip to Florence when I was in my mid-thirties, and I've been pursuing it ever since.

My contemporary figurative practice centers around desire, contemplation, and loneliness, as they are fundamental human experiences.  I also like to prompt dialogue about beauty, sexuality, and sensuality and how they impact us. My style is influenced by artists like John Singer Sargent, Lucian Freud, Egon Schiele, and many others.

My approach to creating figurative oil paintings is still evolving. Generally, I use the direct painting method with the wet-on-wet technique, which enables me to create intentional brush strokes and rich, thick oil paint textures. Although I start by working from photographs, my primary objective is to capture the emotion and overall feeling of my subject, rather than an exact likeness.

Overall, I find my process intuitive and expressive, allowing me to create unique and personalized paintings that capture the essence of my subjects. It's a pleasure to create art in this way, and I hope you enjoy learning about it too!

I work in my art studio in Jersey City, United states.
