    Drawing in St Ives 2016

This photo was taken in St Ives, Cornwall on the Cloggi Coastal Path in the summer of 2016. I was visiting the town with my wife and sister and we all went for a walk along this beautiful path. I find the landscape in this area breathtaking and did some sketching here while we all relaxed and enjoyed the views. St Ives is a place I love and I was first introduced to it as a teenager when my friends and I travelled down here on the train for a skateboarding holiday. They were fun and crazy times and we would spend the whole day skateboarding down the hills around the town and then slept rough in sleeping bags in a concrete shelter on the edge of the cliffs on the coast (which we named Cloggi after the path’s name). Oh to be young and careless! I don't know how we managed it or where the energy and endurance came from! Since that time I have returned as often as I can when I get the chance but like to stay more comfortably nowadays!

    Drawing on Mount Ruapehu

    Drawing on Mount Ruapehu

This is outside the Knoll Ridge Cafe in Tongariro National Park, New Zealand. It is an incredible place that you have to take a chair lift up to and then get the most spectacular views for miles over the park. It is surrounded by snow and you get sun burnt at the same time! I am trying to do an Oil Pastel drawing of the view from the higher jagged Volcanic Rock to the lush lower hills and fields. The sunglasses were essential again as the glare and brightness of the sun was intense and very harmful. I don't mind wearing sunglasses as I work outside and find that they can help to take away the brightness and glare of the midday sun whilst still defining colours.

    Volcano New Zealand

    Volcano New Zealand

This Volcano is in the Tongariro National Park in New Zealand. I was very lucky to have this view from behind our Unit and set up my easel to do an Oil Pastel sketch of the Volcano when it revealed itself. The sunglasses are because the UV in New Zealand is incredibly strong and will really hurt your eyes if you don't wear protection. I know because thats what happened to me!

    Wu Ling Farm

    Wu Ling Farm

This is a photo of me painting a view of the Snow Mountain National Park from our room in Wu Ling Farm. At times if the weather is not so great or the view from indoors is good I will set up at the window like this. It can save me the heatstroke that I have a habit of getting when I lose track of time and paint in the heat for too long!

    Finding some shade!

    Finding some shade!

This painting of Trees and shade was done from the shade over two very hot and humid days on Laem Tong Beach, Phi Phi Don Island, Thailand. I had to find a spot to paint from that offered shade from the bright Sun, and actually had to keep changing position to stay in the shade! It was painted in Acylics on Brown paper and I really liked the contrast between the dark speckled shadows cast on the trees and bright sand with the sparkling ocean.

    Thailand Seascape

    Thailand Seascape

This painting was done outside on the very beautiful Phi Phi Don Island in Thailand. I really love the greens and blues that you find in tropical waters and always try to paint them as much as I can. Coming from Liverpool it is a nice change from the grey/brown colour of the River Mersey! For the past few years I have travelled with a drawing and painting kit that includes my incredibly useful travel easel that allows me to set up and paint anywhere. This was another incredibly hot and steamy tropical day in paradise, which is great in small doses, but make sure you get some shade or the heatstroke will get you!

    Kuta Beach, Bali

    Kuta Beach, Bali

This photo was taken on another trip to Bali when my wife and stayed in The Discovery Kartika Plaza Hotel with an amazing view of Kuta Beach and the Kintamani Volcano on a clear day. I enjoy working outside when possible as I feel it adds to the creative experience. I get to really feel and connect with the natural environment of the place and scene I am trying to capture. This day was very hot and humid and I made a few Oil Pastel drawings of the view in between trips into our room to cool off in the Air Conditioning!

    Drawing Elephants in Bali

    Drawing Elephants in Bali

Travelling always inspires me create new works and try to capture the new environment. This photo was taken by wife in the Elephant Safari park in Taro, Bali. It is a very special place that has rescued mistreated Sumatran Elephants and gives them a better life. I really enjoyed being able to study, draw and paint so many of these magnificently noble creatures.
