About Daniel Petrov

  • Biography

A lifelong artist, I have produced a large and consistent body of work. It is also a body of evidence – evidence of my unique existence, my unique temperament. To me, art is an emotional release, an outlet for my noblest and basest passions. It is a health-giving and peace-giving pursuit. Thankfully, it is perfectly legal. Everything is permitted. Still, there are certain restraints I impose on myself. But even the secrets I deliberately withhold have a way of manifesting themselves. Unconsciously, they sneak onto the canvas. I delight in this dichotomy between control and oblivion. Freedom should never go to waste.

My paintings are executed in oil and acrylic and my drawings in pencil, acrylic and ink. I am fascinated with the human figure and have developed a dynamic and sensuous visual idiom. Characteristic are my long, fervent brush strokes and a penchant for vivid colors, whimsical gestures and heightened expressions. I strive less for realism than emotional acuity. Ultimately, I depict emotional states. Those of my subjects as well as my own.
