Dates: 28 Jan 1994 - 12 Mar 1994
The Northwest Annual was a tradition first established in 1912 in Seattle and was presented by the Seattle Art Museum until 1979, when it was canceled by the chief curator. CoCA revived the Annual in 1989, with 1994 being CoCA’s sixth year of keeping up the tradition. Joel-Peter Witkin was the juror for the 1994 Northwest Annual and selected 104 Washington-based artists out of the 603 who applied. Of those 104 artists, 5 were given a $1,000 cash prize, as awarded by Witkin whose own work, according to the CoCA promo materials, specialized in subjects ranging from death and sexual pariahs to circus freaks, and “physical prodigies of all kinds.”
Biography
Born and raised in Yakima, Washington, Dan McKay is a talented artist passionate about drawing and painting. He moved to Seattle to attend Cornish College of the Arts and graduated with a BFA in 1995. McKay achieved early success with the COCA Northwest Annual in 1994. After graduation, he participated in smaller shows, including Zeitgeist and Lead Gallery exhibitions. McKay dedicated himself to developing his unique artistic style during a hiatus from exhibiting.
In addition to his artistic pursuits, McKay collaborated with production teams at major stunt events such as Hot Wheels at the Indy 500 and the X-Games. He also worked on art installation and fabrication for Comic-Con's Assassin's Creed and served as an art lead and artist assistant at Summit festivals. McKay resumed showcasing his work at several gallery events. He is over one year sober, fresh out of rehab, and no longer a bartender of thirty years. Determined to expand his career, McKay continues to produce artwork and remains focused on his artistic journey.
