About Cristina Cañamero

  • Biography

Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Granada. She has held 13 individual exhibitions and numerous group ones. Her work is present in different public collections such as the CAC in Malaga, the Coca-Cola Foundation, Unicaja collection, Malaga Provincial Council, etc. Also, her work is part of private collections in the United States, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Germany, France, Rumania, Spain, etc. Lives and works in Córdoba.
A great versatility is seen in the work of Cristina Cañamero; from paintings of apparently academic roots resolved with precise glazes to provocative incitements to male voyeurism, from oil paintings resolved with realistic technique in pastel tones to hyperreal representations that emulate the glossy and gamourous finish of fashion photographs. Young women with a restrained appearance touched by laurel wreaths or, on the contrary, flamboyant females that overflow with sensuality, Cañamero flirts with different languages to convey different messages. Thus, she approaches advertising or even pornographic language (as in erotic photo-collages series) when she tries to be critical of the mediatic reification of the female body. She opts for comics and illustration when needs more narrative, and opts for oil when  tries to delve into the psychology of the characters, almost always women. (text by Ana Adell)
