    Mural painting Sept 2021

    Mural painting Sept 2021

I always enjoy working on a large scale, so its great to be panting a mural once again. Here I am working in Canterbury's Westgate Parks, restoring and revamping the Underpass that is along side the river. Its so great to be outside and talking to people as they pass through, some come past everyday so they can see the progress of the work. The Underpass is 300 metres long so it is an awful lot of painting !

    The Paint

    The Paint

I work with a palette knife and heavy bodied acrylic paint, my current favourite brand is Sennelier abstract: I love the consistency of this paint. I work for hours constructing each layer and then applying more until I achieve the desired effect. A painting can take from a few days or up to a month to complete depending on the size of the canvas. Once I have started I will work consistently on a painting until I am satisfied with the finished result. I love the way that the different layers of colour work with each other, sometimes adding a subtle hint of colour changes the whole painting. I am extravagant with paint, I like it thick and heavy, I sometimes use colour glazes in between the layers that will reflect the light. The finished pieces echo the natural world, changing with light and shade throughout the day.

    The Canvas

    The Canvas

I use premium 100% cotton canvases, the frame is made from high quality wood from sustainable forests; These canvases are extremely robust and taut they have no cross bars the frame is in one piece, which gives an excellent surface for painting. I mainly use deep edge canvases which are 5cm deep which enables me to continue the painting around the sides of the canvas. . Although the canvases are pre primed I apply at least another three layers of white primer before staring the work. These are heavier than most canvases I have come across which makes them more expensive when it comes to shipping, however I firmly believe in using good quality products and these are the best that I have come across

    Finishing Purple Shower

    Finishing Purple Shower

The Final day finishing Purple Shower, when is a painting done ? knowing when to stop is a difficult decision. This painting has been a labour of love: I spent a week just putting in the background colour before I even started .....only to paint over it later on ! I do love Wysteria so I wanted to do it justice ,I'm really pleased with the finished painting.

Working on a commisioned painting in the Studio

From time to time I receive requests from buyers to undertake commissions. It can be a be daunting so one needs as much information as possible from the client to meet their expectations. I tend to update the buyer regularly with photos of how the work is progressing so they are clear what the finished piece will look like.

In response to Artfinders wonderful initiative requesting art post cards for the Syrian children in refugee camps. I have created three mini canvas collage on postcards , I wonted to make something tactile and also very visual so I used remnants of heavy textured and bright coloured canvas I covered the cards in gold leaf paint . Thankfully the glue and gloss has dried in time ! just of to post them.
