Updates from Claire Desjardins's studio

  • Artist Claire Desjardins paints a floral painting

Canadian abstract artist, Claire Desjardins, is inspired by the natural beauty that surrounds her. She lives in a quiet area of the Laurentians, and paints most days. Outside her studio is her “other canvas”: a semi-wild flower garden, filled with a sea of daisies and other beautiful flowers. Watch how Claire translates this onto the canvas — or more specifically, onto two wood panels, in her art studio.

    Painting in my art studio

Join me for a little play time in my studio… I’m back from a quick vacation in Florida, and craving creativity. The first thing did was to get into a smock and grab some paints and brushes! Ahhhh, it’s the best therapy for my mind. Painting is an elixir for all life’s bumps and scratches, as it relaxes my mind. I’ll be going back for more, today.

Color is my tool of choice

"I love to try new things, experimenting with paints and other materials, as I spend time in my studio, creating. I love a big, wide brush, and applying paint with generosity. I love the feeling of decadence that comes with moving thick daubs of paint across a surface." -Claire Desjardins.

Live painting on stage with Annakin Slayd and Randy Bachman

During this live painting performance, I shared the stage with Annakin Slayd and super group Styx (August, 2017). At the end of the performance, the painting was signed by the band members of Styx, and then auctioned off to the highest bidder. 100% of the money was donated to help local charities. Video is 3:39 minutes long.

Painting large: the making of Under the Electric Candelabra

Painting large: the making of Under the Electric Candelabra

I love to paint large canvases and murals. I find it very liberating to have a huge space in front of me, on which I can make whatever marks I feel like! When a painting is VERY big, I sometimes have to staple it to the wall, so that I can stand back and see my progress. In this photo, I'm painting "Under the Electric Candelabra", which when finally stretched, measured 65" tall by 118" wide (3:39 minutes).

Painting in my studio, in the Laurentians

Painting in my studio, in the Laurentians

I live and work in Gore, Quebec. My studio is set on the edge of the woods, across the way from our home. When I look out my big windows, I see and enjoy views of nature: the forest, my gardens, even a bit of our lake. It's very peaceful, and I usually play music while I work.

    Getting it out

    Getting it out

When I teach my workshops, I usually do a demo for my students, and I talk out loud about my process. I explain what I am thinking, what I am doing, step by step. This is one painting that I worked on in that capacity.

Contemporary art fair: The Artist Project, Toronto 2016

Welcome to my booth at The Artist Project in 2016, in Toronto. 2018 will be my fourth year attending this fair. I like to participate in these things, and have been trying out different ones, lately: Toronto, New York, Miami, and Los Angeles. As an artist, it's great to get the exposure, and it's fun to meet and talk to people who are interested in my artworks.

    Offering private critiques to students

    Offering private critiques to students

This was a workshop I gave in Stowe, Vermont. During my sessions, I walk around the class, giving those students who want it, individual feedback on their work. Some workshop places let me bring my dogs: I have two soft-coated wheaten terriers, and they are very sweet!

My painting workshop in Nantucket (Sept. 2016): I am the one holding the smallest painting of the group. My students wowed me, as they always do, with their individual, unique interpretations of workshop materials! The Nantucket stop was the last of 3 stops: my husband and I had just returned from our honeymoon in Iceland and Ireland. We stopped in Nantucket, for me to give this workshop, en route home. I met so many engaging, wonderful people, and saw a great deal of cultural richness and natural beauty. I felt very inspired!
