About Christopher Hughes

  • Biography

After studying at Swansea University, I trained as a ceramic artist at the Royal Worcester Porcelain Company quickly becoming one of their leading painters.

I began my freelance career in 1980 and since then I have been fortunate enough to continue along this path and now spend my time painting and teaching both in the UK and on the Greek island of Alonissos.
Landscapes of the UK and Greece feature prominently in my work,in watercolour, oil and ceramic.Still life, wildlife, animals, birds and architectural subjects abound in all three mediums.
With a kiln in my Worcestershire studio,i paint all subjects on fine English bone china, with beautiful hand made plaques and vases depicting traditional countryside scenes, game birds, wildfowl ,highland cattle, fruit, birds of prey and animals.Capturing with great detail  ,each one-off piece,is painted and fired at least five times,to achieve the great depth of colour and subtlety ,deep into the glaze of the bone china.Since the demise of the great porcelain factories in the UK, it has become increasingly rare to find original hand painted pieces of such unique high quality .
