    Hanging in the Russell-Cotes

When Poole Printmakers had their annual exhibition in the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum my East Cliff Hall Linocut of the museum was hung to kick off the exhibition.

    Tiger in the Gardens

    Tiger in the Gardens

When I was teaching printmaking in a hotel near Bournemouth beach the owner had the brilliant idea of creating some huge prints of some of the artist/teacher’s work to line the external walls of their cafe garden. My ‘Tiger tea time’ linocut was reproduced at about 6ft square and could be seen when walking through Bournemouth Lower gardens to the pier. It looked amazing!

    Tiger works in progress

Here are some work in progress pictures of my Tiger Tea Time linocut. In the bottom right print you can see the yellow and orange layers are in their final state but the black key block layer is still a work in progress.

Cutting the Black block of Tiger Tea Time

Cutting the Black block of Tiger Tea Time

Here's a picture where I've started to cut the tiger tea time key block. A key block is sometimes used in printmaking to bring all of the other coloured blocks together. It contains more structural elements and outlines which will make sense of other less detailed areas of colour. In my tiger tea time print I've used black for my key block layer.

Cutting the 2nd Block - East Cliff Hall

Cutting the 2nd Block - East Cliff Hall

This photo shows a close up of the lino block which would be used for the red layer of this print. You can see that I've printed the blue block onto it, as a method for copying the design onto the block before carving. I've then pencilled in the areas I need to remove from the red block. You can see that I've started to remove some of the areas that will become cream (with no underlying blue or red) in the finished print.

    Tracing from the sketch

    Tracing from the sketch

For each of my Dorset linocut prints I started by creating a full colour painting of the design. The next step was to trace each colour layer from the painting and transfer it to the lino.

Preparatory sketch for East Cliff Hall

Preparatory sketch for East Cliff Hall

For each of my linocut prints I start out by sketching ideas for designs. I then work up a more finalised version in colour so that I can plan out how I need to cut each lino block for the finished print. Here is my gouache painting of the Russell-Cotes art gallery. As you can see, it's very close to my final linocut print.

Printing on the Albion press at Poole Printmakers

Printing on the Albion press at Poole Printmakers

Here I am carefully lining up a print to register a 2nd layer. I'm in Poole Printmaker's studio, a lovely little studio in the heart of Poole. And I'm printing using the lovely old Albion press.
