What's a Painter to do when it's gloomy outside?

Still life is the only way to go especially when it's grey and gloomy. I really love how these mandarines pop out in this light. All my still life oil paintings are painted from direct observation using the light that comes in from my window.

I love working with the natural light that comes in my studio window.

When the weather starts cooling down, I like working in the studio. I occasionally go back to painting still life, usually choosing a rare wildflower or some sort of vegetable from a neighbor.

Plein Air Painting Roses in the Hills above Florence

Springtime means I get to spend more time outside plein air painting. This May I had the chance to paint with friends in the hills above Florence, Italy. Yes, that's the city in the background.

Painting Still Life in My Studio in Umbria, Italy

Painting Still Life in My Studio in Umbria, Italy

I love painting wild flowers such as these Rapeseed that grow around the hamlet I live in. All of my still life paintings are painted "alla prima" from direct observation using the natural lighting that comes in my studio windows.

    Simple & elegant Packaging

I take great pride in packaging my paintings and wrap them in bubble wrap, brown Italian packaging paper and string. And btw, I always include a surprise card of some sort! :)

One of My Favourite Places to Paint

One of My Favourite Places to Paint

The locals call this stroll "Il giro della villa" or "the stroll around the villa". It's about a 45 minute walk around the hill that is directly in front of the small Umbrian hamlet I live in. This particular part is simply gorgeous because its got cypress trees, rolling fields and of course an old villa behind me. I often paint in this area especially in the summer, especially at dawn. I love that low lying light and how it casts its shadows on the ground. I'm in love with this place.

Plein Air Painting in Umbria Italy

Plein Air Painting in Umbria Italy

When the weather starts warming up, I love getting out and painting in the Umbrian countryside. Italy has such particular colors, it must be the Mediterranean and its reflective light.

Prepping Canvas Boards and Wood Panels

An excellent painting starts with an excellent base that's why I use 3-4 coats of acrylic primer, lightly sanding between coats. Once they're finished drying I treat the surface with a middle tone color mixed with turpentine.
