    Brenda Jones

My studio is based at my home in Essex.   I create a diverse range of paintings, drawings and collage.    My main subject and inspiration is landscape, both local and places where I travel and spend holidays.   I make sketches wherever I can, using a range of marks to express my experience of what is around me.   These are often done quickly, and there is a challenge to capture the essence in a few quick lines and marks.

Paintings are made in the studio from the sketchbooks.  I like to use colour in an expressive way, with dynamic markings emphasising the shapes and lines of the land, and capturing the experience and character of that place.  The scale of finished work varies from over 1 metre to small paintings, mostly on canvas or paper.

Another side of what I do involves mixed media and collage on leftover pieces of wood, paper or cardboard.  I am interested in the diversity of pieces of odd materials, looking for contrasts of texture, colour, and so on.   This involves an instinctive playing around, letting results happen by chance in a subconscious process.  I put these in frames and hang around the house, some stay put and others go back in the studio.
