About Antoine de Villiers

  • Biography

Antoine de Villiers (born 1977 in Potchefstroom, South Africa) explores the emotional complexities of the human subject. She values the sincerity of the moment more than the reality in which her figures subsist. Antoine has a lifelong obsession with the human form but doesn’t think of her figures as ‘nudes’ but rather vulnerable, truthful and raw without an armor or protective covering. She invites the viewer to project themselves in the moment rather than getting distracted by the identity of the subject.

After surviving a devastating motorcycle accident at the tender age of 17 that claimed the life of her friend, Antoine’s diary was stolen and she lost her medium of expression. Antoine found her artistic voice as art became a means of survival.

Antoine is a veteran artist of over 70 exhibitions across the globe. She has lived on 4 continents, including India, where she taught art to marginalized women & children living in brothels and slums. Her work has received numerous awards, including best figurative artist by the Richmond Art Museum, Indiana and best Solo Artist by Eric Smith at the New York Art Expo.
