All art is artifice, we’re often told, yet Picasso said that art is the lie that tells the truth. In a gallery filled with eyecatching work that can mislead or seduce, how do you find the true nature of the artist? In this new iteration of All Art +, Adriaan van der Plas invites an array of personalities to reveal an essential truth about themselves. In the spirit of the season, some of them are wearing masks. The question is, which ones?
Alli Wolf’s lyrical portraits of heroines make the task of conquest seem easy. Her “Kraken” depicts a contemporary mermaid in carefully-blended tones of cool blue and lavender. Lovely, yes, but what does an alluring sea creature have to say to her audience in the gritty Lower East Side? That the generosity of nature might give a gift of beauty—but that gift might be a tease.

Biography
Alli Wolf is a magical realist painter and storyteller. She grew up in the woods of Minnesota and currently resides in New York. Trekking through the forest, reading shoujo manga, and going to museums with her family inspired her love of painting and storytelling. She received her BFA in Painting from Maryland Institute College of Art and her MFA in Painting from Brooklyn College. After spending her much life in the worlds of Naoko Takeuchi, Tolkein and fairy tales she began to create her own characters for her “Witch Magic” universe. Her paintings weave narratives, tear them apart, and string them back together again to create new fantasies and allegories. The heroines are often angelic creatures but can also be evil beings. She uses paint and storytelling to knit together these ethereal beings into their environment and give them life in the physical world.
