About Alison Chambers

  • Biography
I am an oil painter whose work is figurative but not literal; aiming to capture the essence of what interested me in the subject rather than to describe it literally. I am drawn towards structures and form (including the human form) with recent work focussing on cityscapes. I am also interested in reflections and the suggestion of interior lives (behind windows, around corners in narrow streets) – what we don’t see clearly but we know, or think that we know is there. My artwork stems from an emotional response to a place (and it is this that drives me); London - where I was born - always fascinates, and cities generally. Often I’ll be looking down – a link to the feeling of being an observer, and maybe something of an outsider. The transformative power of snow also currently interests me.
