About Alexander Small

  • Biography
My work occupies the space between ideas of the Dionysian and the Absurd, moving from one to the other exploring themes of futility, pointlessness, hopelessness, nuisance, de individuation, death, rebirth and the irrational.

This activity becomes a strategy for affirming life in the hope of building links between individuals by examining and questioning moments of extremity and stagnation experienced in the everyday. Remnants of events that could be termed dionysian are represented, located, exposed and injected into its opposite. The dionysian becomes the counter subversion to the inert false economies of the apollonian and it is hoped that this dialogue will reinvigorate, create new meaning and affirm life.

Working with a range of media systems including drawing, installation, sculpture, sound and video these ideas are examined through a gentle kind of system mocking, where the system is form such as image, object, machine or event the dionysian manifests in some way as disorder, noise, glitch, corruption, dis function, dissipation, fragmentation, displacement disintegration or de individuation. This process on many levels could be termed as tragic giving birth to the next dialogue of meaning and through this change or end a new beginning is born.

'Small Acts of Detachment' presents a group of Northampton based artists whose individual practices, although diverse, engage with ideas located with time and the past and its corollary memory; conceived here as contingent and fugitive experiences. Collectively the past (the bedrock of culture) is politicised, past narratives are exposed, mythologised and continually revised by their storytellers. The photograph, the memento, the diary or confessional, expose the power of memory to bridge the gap between past and present and its rich wealth of knowledge framed by cultural value, fantasy, belief and desire. The exhibiting artists are drawn from Northampton's two studio collectives, and include: Jonathan Alibone, Vivienne Dixon, Sarah Hyde, Deborah Louise James, Claire Jarvis, Mark Sibley, Alexander Small, and Pauline Wood.

    Event: The Infinity Show

    Dates: 19 Jul 2013 - 1 Sep 2013

Venue: NN Contemporary Art, Number Nine, Guildhall Road, Northampton, NN1 1DP

Full of contradiction and paradox, The Infinity Show starts but does not end with 8 artists and every visitor of the exhibition. The exhibition is the beginnings of an idea of art as a momentary resting point for ideas, forms and the potential, yet impossible, iterations of everything.

The show brings together artists from the UK, Brazil, Egypt, Germany and beyond, working in film, drawing, print, sculpture, Spirograph, text and online media. Using self-imposed rules the artists investigate endless possibilities within geometry, philosophy, the cosmos and more. The falsehood of the infinite imbues everything with each decision both opening up and shutting down a thousand potential routes.
