Alessandro Butera: An Artistic Journey Between Bread and Spatialism

    From Tradition to Experimentation:

Alessandro Butera, a Palermo-born artist (b. 1971), embodies a unique artistic journey shaped by an unusual combination of life experiences and artistic influences. Raised in the heart of Brancaccio, a working-class district of Palermo, Butera spent his youth amidst the aromas and rhythms of the family bakery. This experience, seemingly distant from the world of art, instilled in him a deep respect for materials and craftsmanship, elements that would later be found in his artistic production.

A passion for drawing, present from an early age, accompanied Butera during his years working in the bakery, offering him a creative refuge and a way to express his sensitivity. The loss of his mother, a painful event that deeply marked his life, led him to seek comfort in music, finding in the guitar a new means of expression.

The Art World and the Discovery of Spatialism:

In 1993, a chance encounter marked a turning point in Butera's life. Beginning to collaborate with an art gallery, he immersed himself in the world of contemporary art, becoming a successful art dealer. During this period, he traveled throughout Italy, studying the works and biographies of great artists, refining his taste and knowledge.

It was during these years that Butera encountered Spatialism, an artistic movement that deeply fascinated him. The idea of overcoming the limits of the canvas, exploring new spatial dimensions, and involving the viewer in a total sensory experience resonated with his sensibility and his search for an art form that goes beyond simple representation.

The Full-Time Artist and Personal Expression:

In 2013, Butera decided to fully dedicate himself to his passion, becoming a full-time artist. His artistic production, ranging from painting to "estroflessione" (a technique characteristic of Spatialism), reflects his life experiences and his fascination with matter and space.

His works, created with bold colors and material textures, invite contemplation and emotional engagement. The cuts and extroflexions on the canvases create plays of light and shadow, transforming the surface into a dynamic and vibrant landscape.

    Exhibitions and Recognition:

In recent years, Butera has exhibited his works in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Italy and abroad, achieving considerable public and critical success. His art has been praised for its originality, expressive power, and ability to engage the viewer in a unique sensory experience.

2017-2022: Journey in Search of Beauty: Exhibition sponsored by the Municipality of Palermo, with the publication of a dedicated catalog and the interest of the local press. March 2023: A fabric extroflexed sculpture and an extroflexed "artist's door" by Butera were featured in DOOR magazine of the GEDI publishing group, in the context of an interview with Milanese fashion photographer Stefano Galuzzi, a collector of the artist's work.

    Alessandro Butera Today:

Today, Alessandro Butera continues to experiment and explore new forms of artistic expression, always maintaining a connection with his roots and the experiences that have shaped his worldview. His art is an invitation to look beyond the surface, to discover the hidden beauty in simple things, and to be moved by the expressive power of matter and space.

    Dates: 2 Aug 2023 - 12 Aug 2023

Venue: San Mattia dei Crociferi alla Kalsa, Palermo

The event will consist of an exhibition of my past works ranging: from action painting to abstract expressionism up to the theme of kinetics, through the vision of some everted canvases, inspired by the spatial movement, then by some abstract sculptures and finally, from some experimental, luminous bas-reliefs, which evolve the theme of the passive kinetics of the past, through the use of an active light source, becoming itself the protagonist of the aesthetics of the work.

From a performance point of view, during the days of the event, I will try my hand at creating a painting that will aim to involve the patrons of the exhibition and to express the emotions felt during the experience with the language of signs and colors .
