Painted en plein air (on location) in Point Lobos Nature Reserve near Carmel-by-the-sea, California. I used thick juicy brush strokes to indicate the gnarly trunks and brunches of cypress trees, shaped and sculptured by winds.
Cypress Grove Trail in Point Lobos winds through one of the two naturally growing stands of Monterey cypress trees remaining on Earth, outlined by cliffs with dramatic and spectacular ocean views.
These cypresses, “surviving in the teeth of salt spray and wind, their roots seeking nourishment in cracks and crevices, mirror the forces of nature and time” (Point Lobos Foundation).
Materials: oil on Centurian OP DLX Linen panel
oil, linen, panel, Gamvar varnish, bristle brushes
