This image is from my “wall cuts” project, panels in the New York City subway where print advertising is displayed. The tearing of paper by “subway artists” to create layered effects, in conjunction with its decomposition, yield images resembling finished, intentional works of art. These panels are remarkable for their intrinsic beauty and variety, and the role that chance and organic processes play in their formation.
I loved the way successive layers had curled, separated and mutated in this panel, and the mix of pastels interspersed with more boldly colored scraps of paper.
