Title: Six Steps
Throughout the pandemic and lockdown of COVID-19, I have had the time to notice and appreciate simple moments within daily life and nature, such as the way the light falls through my living room window onto the floor, or the gentle rustle of the leaves outside my flat, but I have also spent time dreaming of places I wish to be. These moments have led to a series of batiks where I have studied these moments and expressed them through vibrant dyes, which are enhanced by the softness of the cotton.
'Six Steps' depicts a botanical garden I visited just a short taxi away from the centre of Marrakech. Having just been trekking and camping in the Atlas mountains for the past week, I enjoyed slowly exploring this magical vibrant garden. The colours I was greeted with in Morocco back in twenty seventeen have found its way back into many of my current batiks through the lively coloured dyes, combined with the softness of the cotton these leave a dream-like feel.
This piece is finished off with orange stitching around the edges and is displayed hung in a bamboo frame with blue waxed ends, which I felt complimented the gentleness of the scene it depicts.
Cotton, Wax, Dye, Bamboo, Cord, Thread, Oil Pastel
