Original artwork description:

Platyosphys is a genus of basilosaurid from Middle Eocene (Bartonian) of the eastern United States and Ukraine. The type species, Platyosphys paulsoni, was originally described as Zeuglodon paulsoni in 1873 on the basis of several vertebrae from a Bartonian-age horizon in Kharkiv region, Ukraine.

The second find was also made in the Kharkiv region and described in 1912 by Oleksandr Fedorovsky, an outstanding Ukrainian scientist from Kharkov University. He lived only 54 years and became a victim of Stalin's repressions.

In the city of Chigirin, fossils of Platyosphys paulsoni were found in 1973, and in 1955, workers at a brick factory in the Kurenevsky quarry in Kyiv found and handed over to scientists the bones of another prehistoric whale. Now they are exhibited at the Kiev Paleontological Museum
