In a lot of Edward Hopper's work the animation of urban life is suspended for a brief moment so haste and unrest come to a standstill. On New York Office we see a young woman behind a big picture window staring intently at an envelope. The surrounding windows and streets are utterly deserted, only my viewer sees her.
When I first saw this painting words like ‘voyeuristic’, ‘lonely’ or ‘alienated’ came to mind. But then I noticed that the woman looks completely content and engrossed in her work. In the background her co-workers are barely noticeable blurs. It turns out that this woman is not alone and neither is my viewer. We have his back.
