In a series of mixed media and acrylic still-life artworks, I explore a temporal dissonance between the present day and the classic past. We enter into spaces of luxury but something remains unsettling. Alterations to depth, brightly illuminated backdrops, and an expressive painterly hand distort these otherwise figurative scenes of elegant household interiors. Experimentations with printed, textured, and colored metallic papers form the foundation of these works revealing shimmering gold and silver-like accents throughout each piece. Viewers are presented with elements of Victorian and Baroque grandeur. Gilded mirrors, chandeliers, console tables, carved ornate frames, and classically designed fireplaces adorn these entryways. Rich vibrant jewel tone colors emerge from the amalgamation of mediums; metallic paints and acrylics meet block printing, excavations and layers of my palette knife, and color wash surface treatments. Despite these allusions to the past, looming in the background are groups of figures, a small evening party perhaps. Filled with modern people engaged in conversation, we remain just outside the threshold in a liminal space that transcends time and culture.
